Official search engine link building do’s and dont’s

December 10th, 2009

Bing recently published a document about link building. Although it focuses on how Bing deals with inbound links, it can also help you to get better links for Google, Yahoo and other search engines. The most important points of Bing’s document can be found in this article.

The importance of link building

The Bing engineers know that link building is important and they describe link building as follows:

“Link building is a very important form of self-promotion on the Web. You contact webmasters of other, related websites and let them know your site exists. If the value that you have worked so hard to instill in your site is evident to them, they will assist their own customers by linking back to your site. That, my friend, is the essence of link building.”

In other words, reciprocal linking is fine. They also remind webmasters that link building is an ongoing process:

“Think of link building as your chance to build your reputation on the Web. As your website is likely one of your business’ most valuable assets, consider link building to be a primary business-building exercise. Just don’t make the mistake of believing it will result in instant gratification. Successful link building efforts require a long-term commitment, not an overnight or turnkey solution. You need to continually invest in link building efforts with creativity and time. Good things come to those who wait (and work smartly!).”

The art of writing a link exchange request that is not spam

May 21st, 2009

Link exchange requests have a very bad reputation. The reason for that is that many people send mass link exchange requests that are nothing more than spam.

However, if you want to get links from authority sites, you have to send link exchange requests. The secret of successful requests is to write link exchange messages that aren’t spam.

Get the reader’s attention

If you want people to read your link exchange message, it should not sound like the dozens of other emails that the webmaster receives. Use the recipient’s real name throughout your message. If your message starts with “Dear webmaster” then it’s likely that it will be moved to the trash. Be personal. Write a personal message for each recipient.

Use a real email address with a real name as the sender address. Free email addresses and email addresses with numbers look spammy.

Get the reader’s interest

What’s in for me? You should answer that question as soon as possible in your email.

Do not list any features. Focus on benefits. First, nobody is really interested in the great features of your website. Tell the recipient how your website solves his problems or the problems of his readers.

Appeal to the ego of the recipient. Tell the recipient that you list only 10 websites in this special category and that he is in that top 10 list. It’s easier to convince people if you appeal to their ego.

Create desire

The recipient of your link exchange message won’t react to your request if you don’t create desire.

To create desire out of interest, you can tell the recipient that you downloaded his ebook, subscribed to his newsletter or RSS feed, etc. The other webmaster is more likely to reciprocate if you have done something in advance.

Do keywords in URLs improve your search engine rankings?

May 19th, 2009

Should you use your keywords in the URLs of your web pages? Do search engines look at the keywords that are included in the addresses of your web pages and do these keywords have an effect on the rankings of your website?

Google’s statement about keywords in URLs

Google’s Matt CuttsGoogle’s Matt Cutts recently posted a video about the position of keywords in the URL of a web page. He said that keywords in the URL do help a little bit.

He also said that one should not obsess with the order of the words and that you should not use too many keywords in the same URL.

Yahoo’s statement about keywords in URLs

Yahoo filed a patent application with the name “Techniques for Tokenizing URLs” that has been published on March 26th. The patent application contains information on how search engines might extract keywords from the URLs of pages.

Search engines look at many different web page elements to determine what a page is about. Most keywords are extracted from the content of the web pages but search engines can also consider the URL of a web page to find related keywords.

Yahoo’s patent shows in detail how keywords can be extracted from URLs. That’s a strong indicator that Yahoo also considers the keywords in URLs.

What does this mean for your website?

If you want to get the best possible rankings for your website, it can help to include your target keywords in the URLs of your website.

However, it is important not to overdo this so that search engines don’t think that you’re spamming. To get the perfect keyword density for your web page URLs, analyze your web pages with IBP’s Top 10 Optimizer.

Why Build Just a Web Site? Build a Web Site That Works.

May 17th, 2009

Review: SiteSell!

You’ll find many SEO and SEM companies, software, internet based programs and get-rich-quick schemes on how to market on the Web, and a few on how to set up an e-commerce site. But none, to my knowledge, that explain in much detail how to maximize the sales potential of your website, the objective of this company.

This one really works, and I was convinced only after a great research of sites using the program, most of them are top 5000 on Alexa.com and hundreds are top 100000! Here you can see some customers reviews, and I already checked most of them for authenticity. This showed me that sitesell is not just a promise, it is a way to build a home business on the web. It definitely is not a get-rich-quick and such, they do work with You, give You secrets none of which anyone making money on internet would share. Read the rest of this entry »

The Power of Commenting On Other Blogs [VIDEO]

June 19th, 2008

You’ve probably heard the age old ‘how to find readers for your blog’ advice that goes:

Leave Comments on Other Blogs”

It was one of the first tips that I was given on how to find new readers for my blog five years ago and it’s one of the first pieces of advice that I hear most people giving still today. It’s so common in fact that I think that many of us gloss over it looking for a ’sexier’ way to drive readers to our blogs.

But today as I analyzed the post featured in this video I saw something that drummed home to me the power of leaving relevant comments on blogs as a way of driving traffic.

The tool I’m using in this screencast video is CrazyEgg -- a click tracking tool that creates a heatmap of where readers click when on your blog.

I do want to emphasize again -- that the strategy of building traffic to your blog by leaving comments on other blogs only works when your comments ad value and are relevant to the post. If you don’t adhere to this you’ll just end up hurting your reputation.

Everyone is looking for a way to work from home

May 29th, 2008

{smartads}Lately, many people I talk to are fed up with their office jobs and are actively looking to find a way to work from home.

Making Money Online Isn’t Hard…Or Slow

I assumed it was both, and you might too.

Some people have tried and never made a dime, or maybe made just enough to buy a cup of coffee at Starbuck’s. So they assume it’s all a scam (it’s not, as you’ll see).

Some people are afraid to try, because they don’t know much about computers, or they think you have to be some kind of super-technical genius (you don’t).

Whatever the reason, most people either don’t even try, or they try and give up. That keeps them stuck in the rat race for the rest of their natural lives.

Alexa new ranking change, Google on the move?

May 22nd, 2008

{smartads}Most of the bloggers track the so called Page Rank, which is Google’s measure of web page authority. The greater this number is – the more authority the page has. The more authority the page has, the more likely it is to show up in the search results for a term contained on that page.

However this is not a complete information about a site, as it does not count visits to the site.

Much usable measure would be the ranking of actual website traffic which is exactly what Alexa rank was providing. It shows the traffic stats for a given website, and a rough comparison of that site’s traffic to any other site on the Internet.

A New Way To Make Money With eBay

May 16th, 2008

{smartads}When you hear “eBay” and “money” in the same sentence your probably think of becoming an eBay seller.

You place product listings in the eBay marketplace, buyers bid, you pay your eBay seller fees and what you have left is your profit margin.

There is, however, another way to build a business which still revolves around eBay but which doesn’t involve you selling a single thing in the eBay marketplace.

This “other way” opportunity is based on the eBay affiliate program and a great tool which makes entry into this opportunity not only possible but also super easy. This tool is called “Build A Niche Store“.
